The Shadow's Edge (2025) - Movie Trailer

Here is the trailer for Jackie Chan's latest movie, The Shadow's Edge! Here is the synopsis (according to Variety):

Set against the neon-lit backdrop of Macau, the film stars Chan as a veteran surveillance expert pulled out of retirement by the local police force. He’s tasked with mentoring a crack team of young detectives to hunt down an elusive gang of thieves that has been running circles around law enforcement.

Jackie Chan is working with Ride On (2023) director Larry Yang again on this one, and he once again co-stars with Tony Leung Ka-fai, who he starred with in The Myth (2005). I don't know, this movie looks pretty good! What we see in the trailer is certainly promising. I'm holding out hope this is a good one! The Shadow's Edge releases in China on August 16, 2025. Hopefully it'll come to America unedited soon after that!

100 YARDS Trailer (2023/2024)

Check out the trailer for 100 Yards, director Xu Haofeng's latest martial arts epic. It stars Andy On (yes, the actor from Black Mask 2 (2002) and New Police Story (2004)), Jacky Heung, Li Yuan, Tang Shiyi, and Hayden Kuo. Here is a synopsis:

100 Yards is set in 1920s Tianjin, northern China, and centers on the rivalry between the son of a martial arts master and his most talented apprentice. When the old master dies, the two face off to take over his prominent martial arts academy. But rather than obey the rule of settling disputes behind closed doors, they take their fight to the street.

This movie looks amazing, I must say. It should be noted that Xu Haofeng's martial arts movies have action that is much more realistic than most martial arts movies of today. No wirework or stylized fights. Some people like it, some people don't. I haven't seen any of his movies yet, but two of them are on my list: The Master (2015) and The Sword Identity (2011). Anyways, I hope 100 Yards ends up being good. It comes out in 2024, so keep an eye out for it!

Little Big Soldier (2010) - A Review

Little Big Soldier is such a good movie!

Little Big Soldier (also known as Big Soldier, Little General, Junior Soldiers, and The Big Soldier) is a historical action comedy movie released in China and Hong Kong in 2010 and stars Jackie Chan, Wang Lee-Hom, Steve Yoo Seung-Jun, Du Yu-Ming, Ken Lo, Yu Rongguang, and Lin Peng. It was written and directed by Ding Sheng, with action directed by Jackie Chan.

The General (on the left) and the Soldier. I didn't even notice that they don't have proper names in the movie!

In Little Big Soldier, Jackie Chan plays a Soldier who is very good at playing dead. There is a war going on between the states of Liang and Wei; the Soldier is from Liang. The Soldier and a Wei general (played by Wang Lee-Hom) are the only survivors of a huge battle, and the Soldier captures the injured General. The Soldier plans on bringing the General back to Liang so he can be honorably discharged from the army and receive money and land as a reward. As you can imagine, the Soldier and the General do not get along. The Soldier does everything he can to keep the General with him, and alive. Things get complicated when the prince of Wei, Wen (played by Steve Yoo Seung-Jun), finds out that the General is alive and sends all of his men in search of him. A particularly ruthless tribe of warriors is also after them. The General, and by association, the Soldier are wanted men. Will the Soldier make it back to Liang and get back to the life he longs for?

Prince Wen (on the right) and his Guard.

I remember seeing the Blu-Ray and DVD of Little Big Soldier at Walmart all the time back in the day, but I never bought it. The cover of the American Blu-Ray was very off-putting to me, and it made me doubt that it was a good movie. Finally watching it in 2023, I can definitively say that I was wrong. Little Big Soldier is really good! I loved this movie! It just proves that you should never judge a movie by its poster or Blu-Ray cover!

This movie is not your typical Jackie Chan movie. There is very little, if any hand to hand combat. In fact, Jackie's character, the Soldier, is not a very good fighter. What the Soldier lacks in fighting skills, he has incredible skill in throwing rocks (and making medicines with the plants he finds in the wild). He is determined to bring the General back to Liang, by any means necessary. Jackie plays this role so naturally, but it is not like he's playing himself (as he does in most of the movies he's made since the late 90s). The Soldier is the underdog in this movie, and you root for him throughout. The General is younger than the Soldier, and is certainly more prideful. He is a skilled fighter, especially with the sword. The General is always trying to escape from the Soldier, and he does succeed at points. The General and The Soldier usually end up back together in some way, though. Jackie Chan and Wang Lee-Hom, as the General, have great chemistry together.

The fight scenes are swordplay based, mainly. Excellently choreographed, as expected.

The action in Little Big Soldier is mainly swordplay-based. In fact, Jackie Chan does not play the expert fighter in this movie. He mainly throws rocks at his opponents (plus he uses his dodging skills a lot). His weapon skills are at a basic level as The Soldier. The bad guys even laugh at how terrible he is at fighting. Still, there is one classic Jackie Chan style fight scene in this, and it's really good (though really short). The General and Prince Wen are the expert sword fighters, along with Du Yu-Ming, who plays Prince Wen's main guard. There are cool fight scenes/battles involving the warrior tribe that are after the General and the Soldier. Those guys and woman are ruthless fighters! The action is good in this movie, with a lot of brutal falls and some cool moves done, but it is not the type of fighting you would expect in a Jackie Chan movie.

I highly recommend watching Little Big Soldier! This movie is so good! Interesting story, interesting characters, good action, plot twists, comedy, and genuine emotion. Jackie Chan gives a great performance, and the other actors give believable performances as well. Jackie and Wang Lee-Hom have great chemistry together. The comedy is really good, as is the action (though not the Jackie Chan type of action you may be expecting). Little Big Soldier is actually considered one of Jackie Chan's last great movies. Watch and decide for yourself. I'll definitely be buying this on Blu-Ray in the future!

"Ride On" (2023) (龙马精神) | Official Trailer 2 (English Subs)

Check out the second trailer for Jackie Chan's latest movie, Ride On. Here is the latest synopsis:

Washed-up stuntman Luo can barely make ends meet let alone take care of his beloved stunt horse, Red Hare. Luo reluctantly seeks help from his estranged daughter and her lawyer boyfriend when notified that the horse may be auctioned off to cover his debts. Unexpectedly, Luo and Red Hare become an overnight media sensation when their real-life fight with debt collectors goes viral. And Luo gets a second chance to choose between his stunt career and his family.

This movie looks like it could be really good! I thought this was going to be a dramatic comedy with not that much action, but this new trailer has proved me wrong! I can't wait to see this one! Ride On comes out April 7, 2023 (Jackie's birthday) in China! Hopefully an international release (unedited) follows soon.

Super Bodyguard A.K.A. Iron Protector (2016) - A Review

Super Bodyguard was a pleasant surprise. Lots of crazy action in this one!

Super Bodyguard (also known as The Bodyguard and Iron Protector) is a martial arts/action movie released in China in 2016, and stars Yue Song, Li Yu-Fei, Xing Yu, Collin Chou Ngai Sing, and Michael Chan Wai-Man. It was written and directed by Yue Song, with action directed by Xing Yu.

Yue Song as Wu Lin, a very powerful martial artist.

In Super Bodyguard, Yue Song plays Wu Lin, a master of the Iron Feet style of martial arts. He has to wear iron boots on his feet for ten years as part of his training. One day he saves a man being attacked by thugs in an alley. Wouldn't you know it, Wu Lin's fellow martial arts friend, Li Jiang (played by Xing Yu), shows up to offer him a job as a bodyguard for the man he saved... or actually the man's daughter. As you can imagine, the man's daughter, Li Fei Fei (played by Li Yu-Fei) is a bit of a wild child party girl, loves Goldeneye, and hates bodyguards . She gives Wu Lin a lot of trouble...until she doesn't.

Li Fei Fei's father has enacted a plan which has made him and his daughter targets. Li Jiang is jealous that he wasn't chosen as the one to learn the Iron Feet style, and wants to prove he can beat Wu Lin with his Iron Fist style. Li Jiang is also in business with some shady people. With all this going on, Li Fei Fei and her father are kidnapped, and Wu Lin (who, as part of his martial arts code, devotes his life to protect Li Fei Fei) makes it his mission to rescue them.

Wu Lin devotes his life to protecting Fei Fei.

I really did not know what to expect when watching Super Bodyguard. I saw the Blu-Ray for sale at the store a few years ago, and for some reason I never bought it. It had an awesome red cover, so I always looked at it, but I just never went for it. I deeply regret that now. This movie has some great action! The story is a bit basic, but that is okay when there is so much action in it. We do find out how and why Wu Lin is the way he is, and what causes him to be such a righteous person. We also find out what motivates Li Jiang, and how he became who he is. They both have dark pasts... There is a little comedy, though some of it is a bit awkward. If you don't like the plot, stay for the action!

The action in Super Bodyguard is hard-hitting!

Super Bodyguard is filled to the brim with action! You get an idea of what type of action it will have in the first fight scene, when Wu Lin saves Li Fei Fei's father from a bunch of thugs. Wu Lin wrecks those guys! He sends them flying with his punches and kicks, and there are a lot of unprotected strikes to the face and head. The thugs go flying into crates and steel drums, damaging them. Then there is a cool chase scene where Wu Lin has to chase after a van, and he uses his highly developed martial arts skills to catch up to it. Very reminiscent of a scene Jackie Chan would do back in the day. The final fight scene is where Wu Lin goes all out against about fifty bodyguards. You can imagine how great this is! You have to see it for yourself, it's really fast and hard-hitting. Overall, the fight scenes are worth the price of admission (though a lot of reviews dislike the quick cuts during the fights. These are done to highlight the strikes hitting their targets: the face and head. Usually I don't like random quick cuts, but these ones have a purpose. Just be prepared for that.)

I really enjoyed Super Bodyguard! I recommend this movie to those who are looking for an easy movie to get through that will give you a decent plot, cool visuals, and awesome action. I'd never heard of Yue Song before this, but now he is on my radar. Can't wait to see what he does next!

THE GRANDMASTER OF KUNG FU (2022) Trailer

Check out the trailer for The Grandmaster Of Kung Fu, starring Dennis To as the legendary real life martial artist Huo Yuanjia. You may know of Huo Yuanjia as the master of the Chin Woo Athletic Association, the character Chen Zhen (played by Bruce Lee in Fist Of Fury / The Chinese Connection and Jet Li played in Fist Of Legend) attended when Huo died under mysterious circumstances. Jet Li went on to play Huo Yuanjia in... Huo Yuanjia (2006), also known as Fearless. This time Dennis To is playing him, and it looks like (based on what's seen in the trailer), he's doing him justice. Here's the synopsis:

Near the end of the Qing Dynasty, a renowned Chinese martial artist engages in a life-or-death battle with a feared Japanese military commander in order to prevent Japan’s ultimate goal of seizing martial arts stronghold Tianjin.

Ten Tigers of Guangdong: Invincible Iron Fist (广东十虎:铁拳无敌, 2022) trailer

Check out the trailer for Ten Tigers of Guangdong: Invincible Iron Fist, starring martial arts legend and superstar Fan Siu-wong (also known as Louis Fan). You may know Fan Siu-wong from his roles in Above The Law (AKA Righting Wrongs), Riki-Oh: The Story Of Ricky, and Ip Man, among many other movies. This movie (or television series, I can't find anything about this; it seems to be a movie, though) seems to be about the Ten Tigers of Canton (also known as the Ten Tigers of Kwangtung), a real-life group of martial artists (of which included Wong Kei-ying, who was the father of Wong Fei-hung; and Beggar So, the legendary drunken fist master).

All I can say is, I am very intrigued by this movie! I hope it gets an international release!

Here is the trailer for Come Back Home, Donnie Yen's latest movie! From what I could find, the story is about how Donnie Yen's son goes missing in the snowy mountains after having an argument (or some sort of conflict). Donnie goes out into the bitter cold to find him. This doesn't look like a martial arts movie, it's more of a dramatic action movie. Still looks really good to me! It's release date is unannounced as of this post.
