BABY ASSASSINS 2 (2023) - Official Trailer

Check out the English-subtitled trailer for Baby Assassins 2, finally coming out here in the United States in a couple of months. Here is the synopsis:

Chisato and Mahiro must pay four years of overdue fees or lose their membership in their assassin guild. They take part-time jobs, but find themselves in the middle of an armed robbery and being hunted by other assassins.

I loved the first Baby Assassins (2021) movie (which I reviewed here), and this looks to be more of the same, but even better! Can't wait to watch this one! Baby Assassins 2 comes out on digital & Blu-ray April 2, 2024 in the U.S., and streaming on Hi-YAH! July 5, 2024!

Hideo Kojima’s Closet Picks (Criterion Collection video)

Check out this video of Hideo Kojima's recommendations of Japanese films from the 1950s and '60s. As you may already know, Hideo Kojima is the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series of video games, along with other classic games. If you've played his games, you can tell he is a movie buff. I have heard of the movies he recommends in this video, but I have not been able to watch them yet. His list strengthens my resolve to finally watch those movies!

Criterion releases a wide variety of classic, artistic, and genre films in the highest quality possible. They even have martial arts movies in their collection! Here is where you can check out and buy what they have, and here is their YouTube channel.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE (2023) - Official Trailer

Toho has finally released the official trailer for Godzilla Minus One (Gojira Mainasu Wan) the latest movie being released on Godzilla's 70th anniversary. Here is the synopsis:

After the war, Japan's economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state.

I have been a Godzilla fan most of my life, so I am always interested in the latest movie being released in the franchise. Unfortunately, I haven't seen every Godzilla movie (I still haven't been able to watch Shin Godzilla, let alone the latest American movies), but Godzilla Minus One is definitely on my radar! After reading director Takashi Yamazaki's pitch for it, I am ready for this one:

"Postwar Japan has lost everything. The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair. The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting where Godzilla looks as if "fear" itself is walking toward us, and where despair is piled on top of despair. I think this is the culmination of all the films I have made to date, and one that deserves to be "experienced" rather than "watched" in the theater. I hope you will experience the most terrifying Godzilla in the best possible environment."

Godzilla Minus One comes out in Japan on November 3, 2023 for the 70th anniversary, and on December 1, 2023 in North America. I need to see this one!

Baby Assassins 2 (2023) - Movie Teaser Trailer

A teaser trailer for Baby Assassins 2 dropped, and it looks awesome! Baby Assassins 2 is a sequel to...Baby Assassins, which came out last year (2022). There is not much info out about this new movie, but here is the synopsis for the first movie:

Upon graduation, highly trained teenage assassins Chisato and Mahiro are informed by upper management that they will need to hold down “normal” jobs as a cover, and—even worse—they’ll be forced to share an apartment. However, after an unfortunate run-in with a Yakuza member, the two must band together to survive an epic fight for their lives.

And here is what I could find about the new movie:

Those two are finally back on the screen...!?
The long-awaited sequel to the action movie of the killer girl duo!!!
His killing skills are perfect, but he can't easily fit in with society... Those two have grown (or not...?) Fun Youth Entertainment!!
A miraculous chemical reaction in which young talents collide freely!!!
Offbeat laughter and authentic action played by unique characters that seem to jump out of a manga!!!

Baby Assassins 2 comes out March 24, 2023 in Japan, and hopefully elsewhere later. It looks really good!

2LDK (2003) - A Review

Incredible movie!

2LDK is a black comedy/thriller released in Japan in 2003, starring Eiko Koike and Maho Nonami, and was directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. This movie was made as part of the Duel Project challenge: Tsutsumi (and director Ryuhei Kitamura for his own film) had to make a feature length movie containing a duel, two actors, one setting, and it had to be filmed in one week. 2LDK was paired with Kitamura's Aragami when shown in theaters.

Eiko Koike as Nozomi.

Eiko Koike plays Nozomi, an aspiring young woman trying to make it as an actress in Tokyo, Japan. She is from a small town in Sado Island, and is a very prim, proper, and organized person. She is vying for a role in a movie, and is romantically interested in a man involved with that movie.

Maho Nonami as Lana.

Maho Nonami plays Lana, who is also an aspiring young actress trying to make it in Tokyo. She has had a few roles in movies already, but really wants this a part in an upcoming movie. She grew up in the city, so she is world weary, and she lives a bit more of an uninhibited lifestyle.

Lana and Nozomi in...happier times.

Nozomi and Lana live together in an apartment set up by their casting agency, and they are vying for the same role in the upcoming movie Yakuza Wives 4. On this night, they are eagerly awaiting a phone call to find out if they got the part. Throughout the night, they get to know each other a little better, and as a result, their underlying tensions come to a boil. Quite frankly, their apartment becomes a battlefield!

Things escalate between the two...

This movie is hard for me to review because, when I review movies I try not to get too detailed about the plot or scenes; I want the reader to experience the movie with a vague understanding of the plot so they can enjoy all the twists and turns that occur along the way. With this movie, things build up and build up until... well, you'll see. Trust me when I tell you, go into this movie blind. It is quite the experience!

Both Nozomi and Lana are very interesting characters, with different backstories and motivations. They both want that starring role, though! They are both the hero and the villain of this story. 2LDK is quite funny as well, though it is a very dark comedy. The things the characters say and think are so funny. Even what happens when everything hits the fan is humorous (to a certain extent). Eiko Koike and Maho Nonami absolutely kill it with their performances in 2LDK.

In short, 2LDK is an absolute must see movie! The first time I watched this (after learning about it on an Asian cinema message board in the early 2000s), I was blown away. I could not stop watching it when I rented it back then. The movie still holds up. It's dark, it's funny, it's violent, and there is a bit of social commentary in there as well. I highly recommend it! If only I could get this on Blu-Ray!

Nobody Wants To Subtitle This Anime || A Heart Cocktail Review/Doc By kenny lauderdale

Here is a fascinating video on the somewhat obscure anime series Heart Cocktail, done by the great kenny lauderdale. He goes into what the anime is about, and the creative force behind it, Seizo Watase. Even though it may have been an anime that has been lost to time, it still influenced the current artists in Japan. Check out the video, kenny explains everything so much better than I can. I really want to watch this series (with subtitles) some day. Still, I can at least enjoy it on a visual and aural level on YouTube. The art style is just so nice to look at. It has nice music in it, too! We shall see if this ever gets subtitled, whether officially or by fans...

(I had nothing to do with the creation of this video)
